Thelma Dickinson, a housewife with an empty and monotonous life, is married to a detestable jerk who treats her like a child. Meanwhile, Louise Sawyer works as a waitress in a coffee shop and dreams of her boyfriend Jimmy, marrying her. One weekend, they decide to take a road trip together in Louise's car to escape the monotonous routine of their lives and all their frustrations.
