Fashion, like war, creates strange alliances. At first glance, it might seem that a small Austrian town specializing in lace craftsmanship and the bustling city of Lagos have little in common. But colonial heritage left unexpected paths, partners, and connections. This documentary, co-directed by Nigerian and Austrian filmmakers, tells a centuries-long, improbable alliance between Europe and Africa. Who should be the narrator of this extractive story? Who benefits from each exchange? What becomes of Africa’s rich textile craft tradition? Is the past something to remember—or to overcome?
